I didn’t start web development as a planned income path. It developed gradually over time through small projects, mostly inside gaming communities and niche online groups.

A lot of it started as simple builds—forums, landing pages, server sites, or small tools that communities needed to stay organized or present themselves better online. None of it felt like a “business” at the time. It was more like solving problems people had in spaces I was already active in.

Over time, a pattern started to form:

Communities would need something built
I’d help set it up or develop it
It would get used, tested, and adjusted
And occasionally it would turn into repeat work or ongoing maintenance

That’s where it slowly shifted from “random projects” into something more consistent.

What actually made it work (in my experience)

It wasn’t platforms or marketplaces that mattered most—it was context and trust.

Working inside specific communities meant:

people already knew the environment I was building for
feedback was immediate and practical
and improvements led naturally into follow-up work

Most of the consistency came from being around long enough that people would come back when something else needed building or fixing.

Reality check

This kind of work isn’t a “set income” situation.

Some months there’s nothing happening, other times multiple small projects stack up at once. It depends heavily on timing, demand, and how active the communities are.

It also scales more through relationships than volume. One good long-term client or community can matter more than many one-off jobs.
